Vote NO on Question 8: Protect Massachusetts' Legal Cannabis Industry

The future of recreational cannabis in Massachusetts is on the ballot this November. At Haven, we're standing up for the regulated cannabis industry, the local businesses that help our communities thrive, and the progress Massachusetts has made since legalization.
Massachusetts voters approved recreational cannabis legalization in 2016. Since then, licensed dispensaries have become part of communities across the Commonwealth, creating jobs, supporting local economies, and providing adults 21 and older with access to a regulated marketplace.
Now, Question 8 threatens to change that progress.
At Haven, with locations in Brewster and Provincetown, we believe Massachusetts should continue supporting a responsible, regulated cannabis industry rather than moving backward.
What Is Massachusetts Question 8?
Question 8 is a proposed ballot measure that would repeal the legal framework allowing licensed recreational cannabis retail sales in Massachusetts.
If approved, the measure would eliminate the state's existing recreational retail system while preserving certain adult possession rights and the medical marijuana program.
A YES vote would support repealing licensed recreational cannabis sales. A NO vote would keep the current laws in place.
For businesses like Haven, the stakes are significant.
Why Haven Supports Voting NO on Question 8
Protecting Local Businesses and Jobs
Massachusetts' cannabis industry comprises businesses, employees, and people who have invested time and resources in operating within the state's legal framework.
Here on Cape Cod, businesses like Haven contribute to the local economy and serve both residents and visitors.
Eliminating recreational cannabis sales would put licensed businesses and the jobs connected to them at risk.
We believe local businesses that follow the rules, invest in their communities, and operate responsibly deserve the opportunity to continue doing so.
Keeping Cannabis in a Regulated Marketplace
Massachusetts has established a system requiring licensed cannabis businesses to comply with rules governing product testing, labeling, age verification, and consumer safety.
At Haven, responsible operations are an important part of the experience we provide.
Removing licensed recreational retail sales would not necessarily eliminate consumer demand. Instead, it could push more activity toward unregulated sources that do not operate under the same state requirements.
We believe maintaining a regulated marketplace is a more responsible approach.
Supporting Cape Cod's Local Economy
Cape Cod is home to a diverse network of independent businesses that help make our communities unique.
From Brewster to Provincetown, local businesses contribute to employment, economic activity, and the region's character.
The regulated cannabis industry is part of that economic landscape.
Question 8 could affect not only dispensaries but also the suppliers, service providers, and other businesses connected to the industry.
For Haven, supporting a NO vote means standing alongside the local business community and protecting opportunities that have developed under legalization.
Preserving State and Local Tax Revenue
Recreational cannabis sales also generate tax revenue for Massachusetts and participating municipalities.
According to the Massachusetts Secretary of the Commonwealth's official voter information, recreational marijuana taxes generated approximately $280 million in state revenue and $50 million in local revenue during fiscal year 2025.
Repealing recreational retail sales would reduce these revenue sources.
We believe Massachusetts should consider these economic consequences before dismantling an established legal industry.
Ten Years of Progress Should Not Be Undone
In 2016, Massachusetts voters made a decision to legalize adult-use recreational cannabis.
Over the following decade, the Commonwealth developed a regulated industry with licensed businesses, consumer protections, and oversight.
That progress has required investment, adaptation, and commitment from businesses across the state.
At Haven, we're proud to be part of this industry and the Cape Cod communities we serve.
We believe the path forward should focus on responsible regulation, education, accountability, and continued improvement rather than eliminating legal recreational retail sales.
